A Countryside Cottage Transformation

Douglas Pryce, a seasoned construction professional based in Jersey, has worked with Oakmasters over several years and remains a staunch advocate of our oak structures. With numerous projects under his belt and experience working with many suppliers, Douglas shares his thoughts on why he consistently chooses Oakmasters:

"When we come to construct the build, EVERYTHING fits, and I mean everything."

The project involved a picturesque granite cottage nestled in the serene Jersey countryside. The plan was ambitious: to transform and extend the property by splitting it into two separate dwellings while maintaining its traditional charm. For Douglas, a key component in achieving this was the addition of a striking oak frame with exposed trusses in the master bedroom.

"I chose to have very chunky trusses—200mm by 200mm—because it’s a country house, and I wanted something with a wow factor to be a centrepiece," Douglas explains. "The new Oakmasters trusses in the master bedroom create a cosy attic feel, complemented by a large bathroom with a vaulted ceiling."

Crafting and Installing the Oak Trusses

Throughout the process, precision and quality were paramount. Douglas describes his delight with the entire journey from manufacture to installation:

"I enjoy fitting Oakmasters’ structures because everything just fits. We didn’t have to alter anything or make changes on-site—the frame went up easily. If you’re fitting a frame and it doesn’t work, it’s a nightmare. Oakmasters have got it right."

Oakmasters’ precision-cut truss components were delivered flat-packed, significantly reducing transport costs. This method eliminated the need for prefabrication and heavy machinery, such as cranes, making the entire process more streamlined.

“No crane was needed, and it was much easier to transport to Jersey and fit together,” Douglas recalls.

An Exceptional Finish with Character

The finished result exceeded all expectations. The exposed oak trusses serve as a stunning centrepiece in the master bedroom, adding depth, warmth, and a timeless aesthetic. Douglas appreciates the natural character of the beams, embracing the unique cracks that form over time.

"The cracks that have gradually appeared in the beams are expected and are all part of the character and beauty. It’s all structural, so I haven’t had to put steels in anywhere. The roof is completely supported by the wood—the beams will outlast any steel, and if there’s a fire, the wood would only char as oak is naturally fire retardant. It was no more expensive to put the oak in than any other timber, steel, or blockwork, and it looks much nicer."

Douglas also noted that the oak trusses contribute to the comfort of the space, providing excellent insulation.

“It’s very warm and well insulated—I haven’t even had to turn the heating on yet. It’s very cosy.”

An Ongoing Transformation

In addition to the oak features, Douglas has incorporated copper guttering and triple-glazed aluminium windows throughout the property. With these upgrades, the house is exceptionally insulated, creating a quiet and serene indoor environment.

“It’s actually over-insulated!” Douglas laughs. “In the old part of the house, you can hear a cat jump on the floor. With the oak frame and insulation, you can’t hear anything.”

The project is still ongoing, with more exciting developments underway. Douglas has replaced a cold, outdated conservatory with a new orangery and has knocked through downstairs walls to create a spacious, open-plan living area. The extensions, he says, deliver the 'wow factor' in every corner.

"I can’t fault it," he adds with satisfaction.

A View Worth Every Penny

Douglas has received glowing reactions from friends and family, all of whom are in awe of the transformation. He even received offers from potential buyers, but for him, this house is not for sale.

"Everyone who visits says, ‘wow.’ I’ve even had one of my customers try to buy the house, but I don’t want to sell, even though the renovation has quadrupled its value. It’s absolutely stunning. My favourite part is the bedroom, where all the oak is exposed. There are double doors leading to a glass balcony, which will be fitted in the coming weeks. From there, I’ll enjoy my morning coffee overlooking one of Jersey’s top beaches—St Ouen’s Bay. I can see the ferries crossing and hear waves crashing from the balcony. It’s worth every penny."

The Oakmasters Difference

For Douglas Pryce, Oakmasters’ trusses were not just a structural choice; they were an investment in beauty, longevity, and quality. His cottage in the Jersey countryside is now a testament to the elegance and strength of oak craftsmanship, creating a home that is not only visually striking but also built to last.
